There is something about a woman who is growing life.

Something that deserves to be seen, like really seen!!! Before the world shifts and the baby arrives and this exact version of her disappears forever.

I've been photographing women for over a decade, and maternity sessions are some of the most sacred work I do. Not because pregnancy is always easy or beautiful in the way magazines suggest. But because it is temporary. And temporary things deserve to be remembered.

If you're pregnant and considering a maternity shoot in Waikato, this guide will answer everything you need to know. If you are thinking of getting your maternity photos done then keep reading below, I made this post for you!

When Should You Book Your Maternity Session?

The sweet spot for maternity photography is between 28 and 34 weeks.

At this point your bump is beautifully round and unmistakably pregnant — but you're still comfortable enough to move, to stand, to walk through golden light in a field and feel like yourself.

After 34 weeks, fatigue and discomfort can make the session harder to enjoy. And enjoying it matters — because the way you feel on the day shows up in every single image.

Book early. Maternity windows are short and spots fill quickly, especially for golden hour sessions in the Waikato region.

Where Are Nami Creative's Maternity Sessions shot?

I shoot exclusively in Raglan — and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Over the years I've found my special spots here. Places where the light does something extraordinary at the right time of day. Clifftops, beaches, open land, ancient trees. Locations most people drive past without knowing what happens there when the golden hour hits just right.

Raglan isn't just where I'm based. It's where the magic happens. Women travel from all over New Zealand, Hamilton, Waikato Auckland specifically to shoot here — and every single one tells me afterwards they understand why.

What to Wear for Your Maternity Session

This is one of the most common questions I get — and my answer is always the same: wear something that makes you feel like you.

That said, here are some practical guidelines:

Flowing fabrics photograph beautifully. Linen, chiffon, silk — anything that moves with the wind and catches the light. Maternity sessions shot in the Waikato's open landscapes especially benefit from fabric that has life to it.

Fitted works too. A soft fitted dress or even a simple matching set can be just as stunning — particularly if you want to show the bump in full.

Neutral and earthy tones. Creams, whites, warm taupes, soft terracotta — these tones sit beautifully in the NZ landscape and keep the focus where it belongs: on you.

Avoid bold logos or busy patterns. These date an image quickly and pull attention away from the moment.

Nude is always an option. Some of the most breathtaking maternity portraits I've created have been with minimal clothing — a sheet, soft light, nothing else. It is never required. But if it calls to you, it's there.

What to Expect on the Day

Every maternity session starts with a pre-shoot consultation. We talk about how you're feeling, what you're hoping to capture, what feels true to this season of your life.

Sessions range from 45 minutes up to 2.5 hours depending on your package, and I guide you through every pose, you never need to know what to do next. My job is to make you feel so at ease that you forget there's a camera at all.

The Image You'll Hold Onto Forever

Your child will one day ask you what it was like to carry them.

These images are your answer.

Not just the bump — but your hands resting on it. The light falling across your face. The way you looked out across the Waikato hills with this quiet, ancient knowing that something was about to change forever.

That is what maternity photography captures when it's done well. Not just a moment. A feeling. A season of your life that will never come again.
