I hear these all the time. And I understand them, I really do. But after years of watching women arrive at a portrait session in Raglan not feeling ready and leave having experienced something they couldn't have planned for, I want to say something gently and directly:

 

The right time is not coming. There is only now, and later.

 

What you're actually waiting for

The body that feels acceptable. The season of life that feels calm enough. The version of yourself that seems worthy of being photographed.

 

Here's the thing about those goalposts: they move. Lose five kilos and you'll find something else. Wait for things to settle and something new will need your attention. The version of yourself that feels ready never quite arrives, because she's always just around the corner.

 

This isn't a flaw in you. It's a very human way of protecting yourself from something that feels vulnerable. Being photographed — really photographed, outdoors in Raglan, being guided and witnessed — is an act of being seen. And being seen takes courage.

 

The women who came anyway

She booked her portrait session in Raglan six weeks after her marriage ended. She wasn't sure why. She just knew she needed to remember that she existed outside of that relationship.

 

She arrived in Raglan unsure. She left with images she kept going back to for months.

 

Another woman booked because she was turning 50 and had never, in her adult life, done something just for herself. Just for the sake of it. She told me it felt almost irresponsible. She drove to Raglan from Auckland on a Tuesday morning, alone, and by the time she was standing on the black sand she was already glad she'd come.

You just need to show up.

 

And showing up, it turns out, is the whole thing.
