Women have always held the role of memory keeper. We document birthdays, first steps, holidays, friendships and tiny everyday moments. We fill camera rolls with the people we love. But when we look back, we often realise we are missing from our own story.
I have photographed over 1,000 women through my Goddess Shoot® experiences and here is what I have learned.
Almost every woman believes she needs to be more confident, lose weight, look younger, or have her life in order before she deserves to be photographed. It breaks my heart because none of that is true.
We deserve to exist in photographs not because we are perfect but because we are here.
Why women avoid being photographed
Most women tell me the same things in different words.
They say:
I am not photogenic
I do not like my body right now
I will book a session once I feel better about myself
I do not want to make it about me
I do not want attention
I look tired...
Photography has always been seen as something for milestones. But what if the everyday season is the milestone? What if being a woman and moving through life is reason enough to be seen?
Photography is not about perfection
There is a myth that photographs are about looking perfect. In reality, the most beautiful and memorable images are the honest ones. The ones with laugh lines and messy hair and softness around the eyes. The ones that look like you and not a version of yourself you are trying to hold together.
Professional portrait photography is not about fixing women. It is about witnessing them. It is about guiding them into a space where they can breathe, soften, and be held without pressure or judgement.
Confidence comes after, not before
Women often tell me they will book a session once they feel confident. I wish every woman knew this truth. Confidence is not the requirement. It is the result.
When a woman feels safe, guided and seen, her nervous system calms. Her shoulders drop. Her breath deepens. Her eyes come alive. That is when she sees herself clearly, not through the lens of judgment but through the lens of truth.
Photography as memory keeping for mothers
Mothers are often the most invisible in photographs. They are behind the camera, not in front of it. But one day our children will ask to see what we looked like. Not what they looked like. Us.
They will want to remember how we held them. How we laughed. How we moved. How we existed in the world. Children do not care about our insecurities. They care that we were there.
Motherhood portrait photography is not about being glamorous. It is about preserving the relationship, the touch, the softness, the safety and the love.
Portrait photography as healing
Being photographed can feel vulnerable. For some women it brings up insecurity. For others it brings up memories. For many it brings up the deep ache of not being seen or appreciated in everyday life.
This is why safe portrait photography matters. It gives women permission to take up space. It gives them permission to see themselves the way others see them. It gives them permission to be beautiful without justification.
You deserve to exist in your own memories
Our lives are not dress rehearsals. We do not need to wait. We do not need to earn being seen. We do not need to shrink ourselves until we meet a certain standard.
You deserve to exist in photographs now. With the body you have. With the season you are in. With the story you carry.
If you have been avoiding the camera, consider this your invitation.
Not to be perfect but to be present.
